About Me
Artist
Mark Hurst
I have a passion for old things and barns...
I started painting with watercolor when I was 70 years old. I had never before picked up a brush, and despite warnings from friends and other artists about the difficulty of the watercolor, I dove in. Age and Parkinson’s Disease has made it a challenge but I have persisted. Lots of YouTube videos, lots of trial and error, stacks of failed attempts, and severe testing of my patience, have all been part of this fulfilling journey.
As a young man, I spent summers on my grandfather’s farm in Idaho, falling in love with old buildings, rustic barns, and rural American landscapes. These subjects are where I have found the most joy.
Additionally, I love centuries-old houses, churches, cathedrals and back alleys of Europe, focusing primarily on places I’ve visited.
One picture started it all.
In the Spring of 2021, I began painting with watercolor. I tried painting apples, rusty buckets, an old oil can, and a variety of still-life’s. I started looking for subjects in Europe and all around the country. One afternoon I stood on my front porch in rural northern Utah and was inpired by my neighbor’s 110-year-old, pioneer barn. That’s exactly the challenge I was looking for.
My attempt looked like the work of a beginner, but I loved it. Two days later, the barn burned to the ground. Since then, I have made it a mission to paint as many barns as I can before they disappear entirely from the American landscape.
